  • Bannon Creek Elementary School Bike Skills Challenge. Sacramento, CA May 2007
Walk Sacramento contracted me to co-teach this Bike Skills Challenge as part of Bannon Creek's annual Fitness Day. I was in charge of instructing the 6-9 year old bicyclists on how to ride on the American River Bike Trail that passes behind the school building. I worked with two groups of 5 students during the four hour event. The kids learned to identify and use their brakes, stay on the right side of the trail, signal with their hand and to stop and look for traffic before crossing roads that intersect with the Trail.
  • Roberts Family Development Center. Sacramento, CA June-July 2007
A friend of the Roberts Family Development Center contracted me to teach bicycling courses to the 45-60 kids enrolled in its afterschool program. The training was intended to prepare the kids for a bike ride from the Del Paso neighborhood to Discovery Park. When it came to my attention that most of the kids did not have a bike and/or helmet, I linked RFDC with the Sacramento Sheriff's Toy Project, a program that provides these essentials to low income families. The supplies were delivered in time for the classes.
I prepared two curriculums; one for the 6-9 year olds and one for the 10-14 year olds. The younger students learned through presentation and demonstration how to perform the ABC Quick Check (brakes, tires, handlebar, chain, helmet and seat) before heading out for a ride and performed the skills on their own bike in the courtyard. After their lunch, the students practiced stopping and looking before crossing streets, staying out of the door zone and weaving around cones via a parking lot drill. The older students how to navigate through four-way stop intersections, stay out of the door zone, scan behind them and signal with their hand before pulling out into traffic through a presentation, parking lot drill and on-road course. David Allen, a fellow League of American Bicyclists Certified Instructor, contributed the professional assistance that I needed in order to effectively teach these groups.
  • Robert Fite CDI. Elk Grove, CA July 2007
  • A friend of the Robert Fite Child Development Inc. contracted me to teach basic bicycling skills to twenty 6-9 year old kids attending their preschool. The kids interactively learned how to perform the ABC Quick Check (brakes, tires, handlebar, chain, helmet and seat) in the classroom and how to stop at stop signs via a parking lot practice drill.
  • May is Bike Month Smart Cycling Clinics. Sacramento, CA April 2008
The Sacramento Transportation Management Association contracted me to give these hour long Smart Cycling Clinics to employees during their lunch breaks as part of its May is Bike Month campaign. The Power Point presentations introduced attendees to the basics of utilitarian bicycling: essential gear, lane positioning, navigating intersections, crossing multiple lanes and route planning.

  • City of San Jose's Road I-On Road Bicycle Training. San Jose, CA May 2008
  • The Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition contracted me to co-teach the road portion of the City of San Jose's Road I course. Road I is the League of American Bicyclists foundational course for cycling in traffic. I rode the street route twice before meeting up with the other LCIs and students; once to gain general familiarity with the path and twice to note particular teaching opportunities. My group of five students and I rode the route twice; the first time was to walk them through the exercises and then a second time through for grading their performance.
  • Yuba Sutter Smart Cycling Clinics. Yuba City and Marysville, CA May 2008
The Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates contracted me to find hosts for and give a series of Smart Cycling Clinics about the basics of utilitarian bicycling to cyclists living in Yuba and Sutter Counties. I adapted an existing bicycling Power Point presentation to reflect the riding scenarios and transit opportunities available in the two counties. The marketing flyer that I developed was distributed through the network of people that I established relations with through my search for hosts and displayed on placards in each of the Yuba Transit buses. The Clinics were well attended considering the short time frame that we had for promotion and participants positively evaluated their experience.

  • Bannon Creek Elementary School Bike Skills Challenge. Sacramento, CA May 2008
Walk Sacramento contracted me to co-teach this bike skills challenge as part of Bannon Creek Elementary School's Fitness Day. As in 2007, I was in charge of preparing 6-9 year old cyclists to ride on the American River Bike Trail that travels behind the school building. I instructed two groups of five bicyclists during the four hour event. This year I started with a parking lot drill that taught the kids how to scan over their left shoulders, hand signal left and stop and check for traffic at a stop sign. The students demonstrated these skills through a passing exercise on the bike trail and crossing of a neighborhood street that intersected with the bike path. The kids also practice riding on the right side of the bike path during the trail ride.
  • State of California's Urban Cycling Course Pilot. Sacramento, CA June 2008
The California Bicycle Coalition contracted me to be the lead instructor for an urban bicycling pilot course for the State of California's Department of General Services. The pilot's goal was to introduce the League of American Bicyclist's strategies for cycling in traffic to the maintenance crew that rides state owned bicycles between the various government building in downtown Sacramento through the course of their work. I co-developed the curriculum as well as developed a Power Point presentation and on-road training course for this course. The attendees positively evaluated their experience.
